Marathon runners frequently get asked that road running is free. One can run anywhere anytime so why bear the expenses associated with running a marathon event which is a highly commercialised and profit making activity for event organisers.
Here is my logic….
My father has been getting up early and exercising last 20 years and training other people as a social responsibility for last 5 years. My father in law too has been getting up at 6am daily and doing his stretches, walk and yoga for last 25 years without a day missed. Does my generation have this consistency and faith in long term benefits and patience to work hard without seeing immediate tangible results…..? NO
We live in different times with respect to stress, dietary habits, lifestyle and philosophies. We want immediate gratification and repeated motivation to stick to something as routine. A marathon event offers an opportunity to receive a finisher medal, flaunt it with pride in social media pics, a sense of accomplishment and recognition for your hard work. This instant gratification is important for many of us to stay focused and motivated. Marathon events allow you to run with like minded people and elite athletes which motivates you and enhances your knowledge about running and fitness.
Think about it this way, last 1 year you have not registered for a marathon. What did you do with the money saved? Now register for a Satara marathon or a Mumbai marathon or any local event. You will be amazed to see how many runs, strength training sessions, hill runs you will do to be able to finish the marathon with decent timings. That translates to at least 10-12 weeks of regular workout. That would make your investment of 2000₹ totally worth it. You must definitely value yourself and your health more than that. And if it’s still expensive for you let me remind you that there are ways to compensate. Cut down ur grooming expenses, eating out expenses. Don’t buy that fancy perfume, that expensive dress and just one weekend eat at home.
To sum it up, if you think that u r a person who is consistent and self motivated enough to do ur workout 5 days a week, go ahead with that and do not fall prey to any event marketing. If you can’t, then events have their own benefits. Of course you must choose ur events well. And lastly something I once read.
IF YOU THINK FITNESS IS EXPENSIVE TRY ILLNESS.
